The Queen's Address at a Reception Commemorating The Queen’s Reading Room Study Outcomes

Dear guests, I am delighted to welcome you to Clarence House this evening to commemorate the third anniversary of my Reading Room as a book club and its debut as a charity.

This year also marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of the remarkable Sir Noel Coward.

He was a brilliant and witty individual who frequented many events here as a friend of The Queen Mother.

Although I highly doubt that this reception will be as lively as the one depicted in Coward's song, "I went to a marvellous party," with its memorable lines:

The excitement was palpable When Laura indulged in Dubonnet and gin And scraped her veneer with a Cartier pin I couldn't have enjoyed it more

Ironically, Coward often mentioned that he wasn't particularly fond of parties, preferring instead to stay at home with an apple and a good book.

While I hope none of you are currently sharing this sentiment, tonight's gathering is primarily a celebration of our mutual appreciation for good books and a token of gratitude to all of you for supporting and promoting a love for reading.

And who better to serve as inspiration for this cause than the man of the hour, Noel Coward, who left school at an early age and credited his vast knowledge to his membership at the Battersea Park Library and his voracious reading habits.

As Vicki will soon elaborate, in addition to our recommended daily fruits and steps, it is encouraged that we allocate at least 5 minutes every day to reading for the invaluable benefits it brings to brain health and mental well-being.

It is now scientifically proven that books are indeed good for us, confirming our long-held suspicions.

The success of the Reading Room in spreading the message about how literature enhances life would not have been possible without all of you.

Over the past three years, it has engaged nearly 12 million individuals across various platforms, generated over a thousand educational literary pieces, and hosted its inaugural festival at Hampton Court, attracting nearly 8,000 attendees from around the globe.

Additionally, the launch of a podcast this year will delve into the literary worlds of 32 captivating writers, actors, and thinkers.

This initial study marks the beginning of an essential exploration into the scientific basis of how stories enrich our lives.

Your talents, creativity, originality, support, and most importantly, your deep admiration for the written word have been instrumental in enabling these achievements.

Coincidentally, tonight marks the 51st anniversary of Noel Coward's passing on March 26, 1973, with a book by his favorite author, E.

Nesbit, in his hands.

E.

Nesbit once famously said, "There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books.

" We, ladies and gentlemen, share a unique bond through our shared love for books.

Thank you for your dedication in spreading this message.
