The King sends his condolences to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand after the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia

It is with profound sadness that my wife and I received the news of Kiingi Tuheitia's passing.

I had the privilege of knowing Kiingi Tuheitia for many years.

He was dedicated to creating a strong future for the Māori and New Zealand, based on culture, traditions, and healing.

He carried out this mission with great wisdom and compassion.

I have fond memories of meeting Kiingi Tuheitia on several occasions, including a warm reception at the Tuurangawaewae Marae in 2015 and a meeting at Buckingham Palace last year.

It is particularly shocking to learn of his passing, especially since I had spoken to him on the phone at the beginning of August.

"A mighty Totora tree has fallen," as the saying goes.

My wife and I send our deepest condolences to Kiingi Tuheitia's family, friends, and all who are grieving his loss.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult and heartbreaking time.
