The King offers condolences to the people of Aotearoa New Zealand after the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia.

It is with great sadness that my wife and I received the news of the passing of Kiingi Tuheitia.

I had the privilege of knowing Kiingi Tuheitia for many years.

He was dedicated to building a prosperous future for the Māori people and Aotearoa New Zealand based on culture, traditions, and unity, which he executed with wisdom and empathy.

I have cherished memories of meeting Kiingi Tuheitia on numerous occasions, including the warm hospitality extended to Her Majesty and me at the Tuurangawaewae Marae in 2015, and our recent meeting at Buckingham Palace.

His sudden passing comes as a shock, especially since I had spoken to him on the phone at the start of August.

Kua hinga te tōtara i Te Waonui a Tāne.

(A mighty Totora tree has fallen.

) My wife and I offer our deepest condolences to Kiingi Tuheitia's family, friends, and all those grieving his loss.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult and sorrowful time.
