The King delivers a speech during the Japan State Banquet

Your Majesties, it gives us immense joy to extend a warm welcome to Buckingham Palace this evening.

EI-KOKU NI O-KAERI NASAI.

[Welcome back to Britain].

Our partnership, Your Majesties, is deeply rooted in history.

For over four centuries, our countries have been a source of inspiration for each other, learning and enriching our industries, cuisines, and cultures through shared experiences.

Even our recreational pursuits have a common origin; it was English climbers such as Walter Weston in the late 19th century who were captivated by the landscapes of Japan, thereby introducing recreational mountain climbing to Japan.

This shared passion is now embraced by many British and Japanese individuals, including Your Majesty and myself.

At the heart of our partnership lies a strong friendship, grounded in a shared understanding of the significance of international rules and global institutions, shaped by the lessons of history, including its darkest chapters.

In today's world, where these principles face increasing challenges, our common values of freedom, democracy, and the rule of law hold more importance than ever before.

Our partnership continues to evolve and flourish, branching out into new endeavors.

As island nations, we share a unique bond that has thrived on adaptation and collaboration to create innovative solutions for society.

The harmony between tradition and innovation epitomizes our shared journey towards a brighter future.

Reflecting on my first visit to Japan in 1970, I witnessed the fusion of Eastern and Western traditions at the Japanese World Expo in Osaka, leaving a lasting impression on me.

Subsequent visits to Japan and engagements with its people and businesses have reinforced the robust economic ties between our nations.

Japanese investors have significantly contributed to the UK's economy, while British businesses have found success in Japan.

Our collaboration extends to scientific research and technology where we address global challenges like climate change and environmental crises, drawing on our deep-rooted respect for nature.

In the realm of security, our countries collaborate closely to ensure global peace and stability.

Our armed forces actively engage in exercises and knowledge-sharing, while government initiatives span diverse fields from energy and the environment to defense industrial cooperation.

These joint efforts are underpinned by the enduring bonds between our people, transcending geographical boundaries.

Cultural exchange and collaboration have thrived between our nations, enriching our creativity and deepening our understanding of each other's heritage.

The cultural milestones achieved, such as the Royal Opera House performances in Japan and the global success of Studio Ghibli's animé, exemplify our shared artistic endeavors.

The presence of numerous young individuals studying and working in each other's countries showcases the strength of our educational and cultural ties.

As we toast to Your Majesties and the Japanese people, I am filled with great fondness and optimism for the future of Japanese-British relations.

KAN-PAI! [Cheers!]
