Having visited Japan five times as The Prince of Wales, the King has attended significant events such as the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito in 2019 and of Emperor Akihito in 1990.
Accompanied by The Queen, who was then the Duchess of Cornwall, the King also made three other visits to Japan in 2008, 1986, and 1970.
The Emperor and Empress of Japan were present at the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, marking their first overseas trip post the Emperor's enthronement.
Furthermore, The Emperor attended a special reception hosted by The King for Heads of State and Official Overseas Guests at Buckingham Palace on the evening before the State Funeral, on 18th September 2022.
The planned State Visit to the United Kingdom in Spring 2020 by Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
