His Royal Highness has taken on the role of Patron for a newly launched initiative aiming to establish The Fleming Centre by 2023.
Situated at St.
Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, this initiative is being spearheaded by Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
The Fleming Centre aims to lead a worldwide campaign against AMR.
AMR arises when the microorganisms causing infections develop resistance to treatments like antibiotics, making these infections challenging or impossible to treat.
This resistance raises the likelihood of disease transmission, severe illness, disability, and mortality.
The menace of antimicrobial resistance looms over our health, environment, livelihoods, and future.
Unless immediate and collaborative action is taken, the consequences of drug resistance will impact future generations, jeopardizing the health of our descendants.
The event, hosted at the Royal Society in London, highlighted the latest scientific and economic studies on antimicrobial resistance, commended efforts to raise awareness about the issue, and formed a part of the preparation for an upcoming High-Level Meeting on the topic at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
At the event, survivors of AMR shared their narratives, and Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham, Chair of the Fleming Initiative, provided an update on the progress of the Initiative so far, which includes the establishment of The Fleming Centre.
