The status of a City was officially granted to Douglas in May 2022 during the observance of the late Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee.
Serving as the Isle of Man's capital since 1896, Douglas is also recognized as the dwelling of the Manx Parliament, Tynwald, holding the title of the oldest continuous parliament globally.
Following this, Her Majesty proceeded to Government House to meet with The Honourable Alfred Cannan, the Chief Minister.
She was greeted by various community groups, such as representatives from the RNLI and the Manx Bluetits swimming club.
Douglas additionally holds the distinction of being the birthplace of the RNLI, set to commemorate its bicentenary in 2024.
Two centuries ago, a resident of Douglas, Sir William Hilary, witnessed multiple shipwrecks along the Manx coast, prompting him to establish a national organization dedicated to safeguarding and rescuing lives at sea.
The Queen engaged with Isle of Man charity representatives specializing in environmental conservation and cancer assistance.
