Her Majesty The Queen's Address at the Charleston Festival 2024

Hello everyone, I hope you're all having a great morning despite the weather.

Having lived in Sussex for many years, I remember it always being sunny.

It is with immense delight that I, as the esteemed Patron of Charleston, extend a warm welcome to all of you attending this year's Literary Festival.

Charleston has been aptly described by a former resident as "an earthly paradise".

Prior to my arrival, I was asked to reflect on an author whose books resonated with me when I was young, just like some of you here today.

Choosing a favorite author is no easy task, given the vast array of literary talents out there.

However, I have picked a Victorian novelist who passed away exactly a century ago.

For clarity, let me mention that despite any assumptions, I am not a Victorian myself.

Frances Hodgson Burnett, much like all of us, recognized the enchanting allure of reading.

Known for her works including "The Secret Garden" and "A Little Princess," Burnett once wrote about a character: "Never did she find anything so difficult as to keep herself from losing her temper when she was suddenly disturbed while absorbed in a book.

"

Many of us can relate to that sentiment.

Frances also had a profound understanding of the mystique surrounding secret gardens, akin to the one here at Charleston.

Books and gardens share numerous qualities, a realization not lost on Frances or the renowned authors who once resided at Charleston.

They understood that both books and gardens are steadfast companions we can always turn to.

These entities possess the ability to bring solace, joy, and bridge connections between individuals and nature, reminding us that we are never truly alone.

Moreover, they possess a captivating power over our imaginations.

The protagonist of the story, Mary Lennox, witnesses how "the secret garden bloomed and bloomed and every morning revealed new miracles.

"

A similar sense of wonder could be found in the library at Misselthwaite Manor, her residence.

Now, it's time for us to immerse ourselves in a bit of magic.

Without further delay, I officially declare today's Festival open!

In parting, I leave you with a final reflection from Frances: 'Everything's a story - You are a story - I am a story'.

Thank you.
