Today marks my first visit to Catterick as your proud Colonel-in-Chief, and it brings to mind my father's recount of joining the 12th Lancers in 1937.
In his memoir, "Previous Engagements," he fondly described the warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere he encountered, guided by an efficient Adjutant and seasoned NCOs who mentored him with a blend of skill and humor.
Nearly nine decades later, it warms my heart to witness that the same welcoming and relaxed ethos persist within the Lancers, even if I refrain from delving into the NCOs' affinity for beer!
As you gear up for operational assignments in Poland, Kosovo, and Cyprus, I am pleased to convene with you all today amidst your busy preparations.
My father often lauded the Regiment as a highly skilled entity teeming with unique personalities, and I am confident that your forthcoming deployments will not only be successful but will enrich the storied legacy of our Regiment.
The familial bond that defines the Lancers has always resonated with me, having experienced their unwavering support as a Regiment daughter.
It heartens me to see many families and Old Comrades Association members here today, especially as your loved ones brace for deployments abroad.
Reflecting on the British Expeditionary Force's arduous retreat to Dunkirk in the face of adversity, my father expressed his admiration for his troop's resilience and camaraderie, recognizing the debt he owed to his soldiers as a Troop Leader.
As you embark on complex and challenging deployments, I am confident that the indomitable spirit of Lancers camaraderie will shine through, embodying your unwavering commitment to making our world a safer place.
I wish you all Godspeed in the months ahead, with the utmost fortune and a safe return.
Warm regards,Colonel-in-Chief
