Further information about the forthcoming State Visit from The Emperor and Empress of Japan

The Emperor and Empress of Japan are set to arrive discreetly in the United Kingdom on the afternoon of Saturday, 22nd June at Stansted Airport.

Upon their arrival, His Excellency Mr.

Hajime Hayashi, Ambassador of Japan, will greet Their Majesties.

The Viscount Brookeborough KG, Lord-in-Waiting, will extend the official welcome on behalf of The King.

Prior to the commencement of the State Visit agenda, the Emperor will engage in a series of private engagements, which will include visits to Japan House and the Thames Barrier.

In continuation, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales will meet the Emperor and Empress of Japan at their accommodation, representing The King on Tuesday morning.

Subsequently, His Royal Highness will accompany Their Majesties to Horse Guards Parade, where they will receive a Ceremonial Welcome.

The formal welcome will take place at the Royal Pavilion on Horse Guards Parade, with The King and Queen in attendance.

The itinerary will include presentations, a Royal Salute by the Guard of Honour, and the playing of the Japanese National Anthem.

Following the inspection of the Guard of Honour, comprising the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards and the Band of the Welsh Guards, the Emperor and Empress will join The King and Queen, along with The Prince of Wales, for a carriage procession along The Mall to Buckingham Palace.

At the Palace, a second Guard of Honour formed of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards will be present.

After a luncheon hosted by The King at Buckingham Palace, Their Majesties will have the opportunity to view a special exhibition in the Picture Gallery, featuring items from the Royal Collection related to Japan.

Later in the day, the Emperor and Empress will visit Westminster Abbey, where the Emperor will lay a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior.

A guided tour of the Abbey will be led by the Dean of Westminster.

As evening descends, The King, accompanied by The Queen and other members of the Royal Family, will host a State Banquet at Buckingham Palace for The Emperor and Empress of Japan, with speeches delivered by both monarchs.

During the visit, the Emperor will also explore The Francis Crick Institute, a prominent biomedical research center in the UK.

The Institute facilitates a collaborative UK-Japan research initiative focusing on various public health matters such as cancer, vaccines, and the role of genetics in infectious diseases.

The visit will be further enriched with an evening banquet at the Guildhall, hosted by the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation, attended by The Emperor of Japan and Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, among others.

The official State Visit programme will come to a grand conclusion as The Emperor and Empress bid farewell to The King and Queen at Buckingham Palace on the final morning.

Subsequently, The Imperial couple will journey to Young V&A, a part of the V&A museum network dedicated to celebrating global creativity, to experience the ongoing Japan: Myths to Manga exhibition.

Additionally, the Emperor will privately pay respects at St.

George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, laying a wreath at the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II in the King George VI Chapel, where the Garter Banners of current Order of the Garter members are displayed.

Later in the day, The Emperor will tour the historic Temperate House at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, home to the Millennium Seed Bank.

This bank, managed by Kew, houses over 2.

4 billion wild plant seeds from 97 countries, preserving global biodiversity.

The Temperate House is currently showcasing bronze Bonsai sculptures by artist Marc Quinn, complemented by Bonsai trees from Kew’s collection.

Concluding their UK visit, The Emperor and Empress of Japan will partake in a private programme in Oxford, including visits to the colleges they attended.

Prior to departure, The Lord Chamberlain will bid the Imperial couple farewell on behalf of The King, at RAF Brize Norton.
