Errollyn Wallen CBE named inaugural Master of The King’s Music in the new reign

Ms Errollyn Wallen CBE has been appointed as the new Master of the King’s Music by His Majesty The King, marking the first such appointment of his reign.

She takes over from Dame Judith Weir DBE, who was appointed to the role in July 2014 by Queen Elizabeth II.

The Master of The King’s Music is an esteemed honorary position appointed by the Sovereign to recognize a musician of exceptional talent who has contributed to the music scene in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

The title of Master of The King’s Music dates back to the time of King Charles I, when the Master oversaw the Sovereign’s band of musicians.

The tradition continued until 1899 when a separate Queen’s Band was established.

Since the reign of King George V, the role has had no specific duties, often involving composing music for special Royal events like weddings, jubilees, and coronations, at the discretion of the Master.

In response to the appointment, Errollyn Wallen CBE stated: 'I am truly honored to receive this prestigious royal appointment.

Serving His Majesty The King, the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth in this capacity will be a privilege.

I am excited to promote the art of music and music-making for all.

'

Ms Wallen, a Belize-born British composer, pianist, and singer-songwriter, has created music for various occasions such as the BBC Proms, the COP26 summit, and the 2012 Paralympic Games.

She was commissioned to compose pieces for Queen Elizabeth II's Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

Notably, her composition for string orchestra titled ‘Photography’ (2006) was performed by The Honours of Scotland Ensemble at the Service of Thanksgiving for King Charles III and Queen Camilla at St Giles’ Cathedral in July 2023.
