Errollyn Wallen CBE named as the first Master of The King’s Music in the new reign

His Majesty The King has appointed Ms Errollyn Wallen CBE as the new Master of the King’s Music, marking the first appointment to this prestigious role during his reign.

Ms Wallen takes over from Dame Judith Weir DBE, who was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II in July 2014.

The Master of The King’s Music is an honorary position granted by the Sovereign to a distinguished musician who has significantly contributed to the musical landscape of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Established during the reign of King Charles I, the Master traditionally led the Sovereign’s band of musicians.

However, this practice ceased in 1899 with the formation of a separate Queen’s Band under King George V.

The role now entails no fixed responsibilities, with Masters often composing music for special Royal events like weddings, jubilees, and coronations.

Expressing her excitement, Errollyn Wallen CBE stated, "I am honored to accept this royal appointment.

Serving His Majesty The King, the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth will be a privilege, and I am eager to promote music and music-making for all.

" Ms Wallen, a Belize-born British composer, pianist, and singer-songwriter, has created compositions for prominent events such as the BBC Proms, COP26 summit, and the 2012 Paralympic Games.

Furthermore, Ms Wallen has been commissioned to compose pieces commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden and Diamond Jubilees.

Notably, her work 'Photography' (2006) for string orchestra was performed by The Honours of Scotland Ensemble at a Service of Thanksgiving for King Charles III and Queen Camilla at St Giles’ Cathedral in July 2023.
