Clarence House: The Queen Hosts 'Maiden' Yacht Crew

The Queen recently hosted a reception at Clarence House to congratulate the 'Maiden' yacht crew on their historic victory in the Ocean Globe Race.

The all-female crew made history by becoming the first to win an around-the-world yacht race.

The Ocean Globe Race (OGR) is a throwback to the 1973 Whitbread Round the World Race, with a fully crewed retro concept.

This edition, marking the 50th anniversary of the original race, challenged the crews to navigate without modern technology like computers and GPS, relying on sextants and paper charts.

The 2023-24 Ocean Globe Race featured 14 boats embarking on a 27,000 nautical mile journey across four legs, passing through three great Capes and making stops in South Africa, New Zealand, and Uruguay before returning to the UK.

This anniversary event commemorated the first Whitbread Round the World Race.

Thirty years ago, skipper Tracy Edwards MBE led an all-female crew aboard the 58ft Maiden yacht in the 1989/90 Whitbread Round the World Race, finishing as runners-up and winning multiple legs.

The team made history as the first all-female crew in a global yacht race.

In 2018, Maiden was repurposed for a global tour to support girls' education.

The boat's renovation was visited by The King and Queen, The Prince of Wales, and The Duchess of Cornwall, with HRH Princess Haya overseeing the refurbishment.

In September 2023, under Tracy Edwards' leadership, Maiden set off on the Ocean Globe Race with an incredibly diverse international crew representing various nations.

The lineup included the first black female crew member and the first Middle Eastern female crew member in a global race, showcasing inclusivity and diversity.

After 153 days at sea, Maiden crossed the finish line, securing their place in history as the first all-female team to triumph in an around-the-world yacht race.

Prior to their departure in September 2023, The Queen sent a message of encouragement to the crew, expressing her pride in their mission and wishing them fair winds and safe seas as they embarked on their remarkable journey.
