Announcement of new appointments to different Orders of Chivalry

His Majesty The King has graciously appointed four new Companions to the Order of the Garter.

The newly appointed Companions are as follows: Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Gloucester, GCVO, DStJ, CD, has been named a Royal Lady Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

Air Chief Marshal the Lord Peach, GBE, KCB, DL, has been appointed as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The Right Honourable the Lord Kakkar, KBE, has been chosen as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The Lord Lloyd-Webber has been selected as a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most prestigious Order of Chivalry in Britain.

Each year, it is commemorated with a procession and service held in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The appointments of the Knights and Ladies of the Garter are at the discretion of The King, without the need for Prime Ministerial advice.

These appointments belong to the same category as the Order of the Thistle, the Order of Merit, and the Royal Victorian Order, which are also within The King's gift.

This announcement increases the number of Companions to 21 out of a maximum of 24.

The Garter Service for this year will be held in the summer at St.

George's Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Furthermore, His Majesty The King has appointed His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, KG, KT, ADC, as the Great Master of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath.

The Most Honourable Order of the Bath, established by King George I in 1725 (though believed to have roots dating back to the eighth century), is bestowed upon members of the military or civil service for exceptional service.

In addition, His Majesty The King has appointed Her Majesty The Queen as the Grand Master and First or Principal Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, established by King George V in 1917, aims to honor a wide range of society, both military and civilian.

Lastly, His Majesty The King has appointed Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales, GCVO, as a Royal Companion of The Order of the Companions of Honour, a new appointment established by King George V in 1917 to acknowledge exceptional achievements in Arts, Sciences, Medicine, and Public Service.

All appointments are effective from 23rd April 2024.
