Announcement from The King for the 2024 Royal Maundy Service

Due to his absence, His Majesty could not attend the 2024 Royal Maundy Service, and instead a recorded message was played for the congregation at Worcester Cathedral.

The audio message commenced with The King delivering The First Lesson – a reading from the Gospel according to John (John 13.

1 – 15).

“Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, it is with deep regret that I am unable to join you all today.

The Maundy Service holds a special place in my heart.

It originates from the account of Our Lord kneeling before his disciples and humbly washing their tired feet, setting an example of service and care for one another, as we have just heard.

In our nation, we are fortunate to have various services dedicated to our well-being.

Beyond these organizations and their dedicated workers, we greatly benefit from those who offer friendship, especially in times of need.

The 150 individuals chosen to receive the Maundy Money from my wife today exemplify such kindness - they go above and beyond, dedicating their lives to serving others in their communities.

As we gather for this worship service at Worcester Cathedral, I am reminded of the vow I made at my Coronation - to follow Christ’s example of serving rather than being served.

I have endeavored to fulfill this pledge wholeheartedly.

My prayer today is that the spirit of serving one another, displayed by Our Lord, will continue to inspire and fortify our communities.

May God bless you all this Easter.
