Address by Her Majesty The Queen during her inaugural visit to The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeth's Own) following her appointment as Colonel-in-Chief

Dear Lancer comrades, Arriving at Catterick today for my inaugural visit as the honored Colonel-in-Chief fills me with nostalgia as I think back to my father's vivid recollections of his early days with the esteemed 12th Lancers in 1937.

In his memoir, "Previous Engagements," he fondly recounted the warm welcome and relaxed atmosphere that greeted him upon joining the Regiment.

He spoke of the Adjutant, a kind and efficient officer who mentored him through challenges and guided his development with the subtle support of seasoned NCOs.

The camaraderie and competence of these individuals, despite their occasional indulgence in beer, left a lasting impression on him.

Fast forward 87 years, and I am pleased to witness that the spirit of warmth and camaraderie still thrives within the Lancers, with a new generation of leaders maintaining the tradition of excellence.

As you gear up for upcoming missions to Poland, Kosovo, and Cyprus, I commend your dedication and unity in facing the tasks ahead.

My father once described the Regiment as a highly proficient and vibrant group of individuals, and I have no doubt that your forthcoming deployments will uphold this legacy of success.

The strong sense of community and support within the Lancers, which I personally experienced as a Regiment daughter, is evident today with the presence of families and members of the Old Comrades Association.

In times of adversity, such as the challenging retreat to Dunkirk, my father highlighted the remarkable solidarity and resilience of his troop, acknowledging their pivotal role in his leadership journey.

As you prepare for missions that demand courage and expertise, I have full confidence that the spirit of unity among the Lancers will guide you towards ensuring a safer world for all.

I extend my heartfelt wishes for a safe and successful deployment in the months ahead.

May you all be blessed with strength, fortune, and a swift return.

Warm regards,
